Hit the Beach! Kaiser Park, with its northwestern corner nestled on Coney Island, is the perfect combination of beach fun and beauty combined with the functionality of a landlocked park.Want the perks of a beach? Head to the pier, toss a line, and see what fish are biting today. Or, if it's just the beauty you want, stare at the sun setting behind the distant Verrazano-Narrows Bridge or go to the Gravesend Bay side of the park for a glimpse of magnificent migrating birds.
After all that relaxing, lace up your sneakers and jog a lap around the state-of-the-art track reopened in 2006. If team sports are more your style, meet some friends at the soccer, football, or baseball fields, all of which have also been recently renovated.
Finally, end your day with a barbecue at one of the 20 grills within the park. While digesting your meal, plan your next trip to the park. Will it be tennis, handball, or playground fun the next time around?
Want to get involved in the park? Throughout the year with the help of local elected officials, an organization named Friends of Kaiser Park (FOKP) hosts a variety of special events. During It's My Parks Day, FOKP hosts Arts in the Park, a popular event that attracts hundreds of visitors of all ages. FOKP partners with the New York Public Library, the Department of Aging, and local businesses to present live entertainment, children's activities, and a barbecue funded by City Council Member Domenic Recchia.
FOKP also hosts an Easter Egg Hunt and an annual holiday tree lighting event with an after party, giving away dozens of donated toys to Coney Island youth.
For more information, contact FOKP at (917) 873-9261.
